When Brendan O’Keefe first read The Happy Manifesto by Henry Stewart, he thought it was great.
“I bought into the whole idea of The Happy Manifesto, freedom and autonomy so much, and it really seemed so inherently obvious that this is the way to go. What is there not to like?”, says Brendan.
Unfortunately, when Brendan announced this new direction to Epic CIC’s culture at their staff conference, followed by a talk by Henry, some of the staff did not feel the same way.
“The assumption I made, which was the wrong one, was that everybody would like it from day one and that they would enjoy the thought that they were being trusted and given the freedom to do their job.”
Changing an organisation’s culture so radically from command and control to trust and autonomy was never going to be easy. Brendan explains more in this short video from the 2017 Creating Happy Workplaces in the Public Sector Conference, from 22nd February 2017.
